A psychomanteum is a small dark area with a comfortable chair and a mirror (or mirrors). The psychomanteum was created by Dr. Raymond Moody through adaptations of ancient techniques of Necromanteion. The Psychomanteum technique involves gazing into reflected darkness, a special form of scrying.
Sit comfortably and adjust the mirror’s angle to reflect pure darkness. Allow yourself to become relaxed while looking into the mirror’s depth without trying to really see anything. Use self hypnosis or any method that helps you to achieve deep relaxation. When your arms feel heavy and your fingers tingle, you will have reached a hypnogogic state (the early altered consciousness state).
The reflection of the mirror might become hazy resembling the sky on a cloudy day. Or the reflection may, instead, darken. In either case, the visions will soon appear. When they appear, avoid trying to manipulate them. Let the visions flow by you and not through you. Trying to control these visions will, unfortunately, drive them away.
Visions may last only one to ten minutes. It mainly depends on how well you are able to maintain relaxation. The experience has a clear beginning and ending. The more you practice this and develop proficiency, the longer you will be able to view the images in the mirror. Eventually you will be able to focus on specific tasks.
Sometimes there may be no visions, instead you might hear or feel something (like a touch). In some cases, you might feel a place, yet not see anything. Nostradamus, allegedly, experienced the sensation of passing into the mirror. (Maybe Alice In Wonderland was more than a children’s tale.) Visions could even come out and visit with you.
